According to foreign media reports, the e-bike market in the Netherlands continues to grow significantly, and market analysis shows a high concentration of a few manufacturers, which is very different from Germany.

There are currently 58 brands and 203 models in the Dutch market. Among them, the top ten brands account for 90% of the market share. The remaining 48 brands have only 3,082 vehicles and only 10% share. The e-bike market is highly concentrated among the top three brands, Stromer, Riese & Müller and Sparta, with a 64% market share. This is mainly due to the small number of local e-bike manufacturers.

Despite the new sales, the average age of e-bikes on the Dutch market has reached 3.9 years. The three major brands Stromer, Sparta and Riese & Müller have around 3,100 e-bikes over five years old, while the remaining 38 different brands also have 3,501 vehicles over five years old. In total, 43% (nearly 13,000 vehicles) are more than five years old. And before 2015, there were 2,400 electric bicycles. In fact, the oldest high-speed electric bicycle on Dutch roads has a history of 13.2 years.

In the Dutch market, 69% of the 9,300 electric bikes were purchased for the first time. In addition, 98% were purchased in the Netherlands, with only 700 speed e-bikes from outside the Netherlands.

In the first half of 2022, sales will increase by 11% compared to the same period in 2021. However, the results were still 7% lower than sales in the first half of 2020. Growth will average 25% in the first four months of 2022, followed by declines in May and June. According to Speed Pedelec Evolutie, total sales in 2022 are forecast at 4,149 units, a 5% increase compared to 2021.

ZIV reports that the Netherlands has five times more electric bicycles (S-Pedelecs) per capita than Germany. Taking into account the phasing out of e-bikes, 8,000 high-speed e-bikes will be sold in 2021 (Netherlands: 17.4 million people), a figure more than four and a half times higher than Germany, which has more than 83.4 million inhabitants in 2021. Therefore, the enthusiasm for e-bikes in the Netherlands is much more evident than in Germany.
